SWINDON Robins rider Nick Morris says that missing out on a place in Australia’s World Cup team will only serve to fuel his fire to return to racing at the highest level.

Morris, who turned 22 last month, made his senior international debut 12 months ago after being named by team manager Mark Lemon in the Aussie squad for the 2015 World Cup.

They missed out on medal in Vojens, Denmark by just a single point in last year’s final but Morris has been left even more disappointed this time are around as injury and a loss of form have seen him overlooked by Lemon.

Instead, Morris will have to watch on as Robins team-mate Jason Doyle, Chris Holder, Sam Masters, Max Fricke and Brady Kurtz lead the Aussie charge for global speedway glory.

“It’s going to be an awesome meeting, the World Cup is always good. It’s a shame I am not in it this year but I don’t deserve to be going on my performances. I will watch it and cheer the boys on,” said Morris.

“It’s definitely made me hungrier to get back there. That’s my dream, to be racing at that level and in the Grand Prix and stuff but I haven’t stepped up this year.

“I took a gamble by riding in Poland and it hasn’t worked out and I have been struggling.

“But you have highs and lows and I have just got to keep battling on. I am determined to make it but it’s not going to come easy, I know that.”

Australia will look to book a place in Saturday’s final at the new National Speedway Stadium in Manchester when they race in World Cup Event Two this evening.

Morris admits his countrymen will be up against it to secure qualification outright against host nation Sweden but expects them to at least still be in the running come Friday night’s race-off at Belle Vue.

“It is going to be tough against Sweden on their home turf as they have got a good team but worst case scenario is that they have to go to the race-off, which is going to be tough as well,” said Morris.

“But on their day, Sam, Max, Doyley, Holder and Brady, they can go out and win the semi so we will just have to wait and see what happens.”
