PURTON vice-captain Tom Bowler believes it is all to play for in WEPL Wiltshire as they prepare to go to bottom of the league Malmesbury.

Five sides are currently vying it out to claim the league title, with Purton firmly in the hunt with six games left to play.

Marshfield lead the way, with a 12-point cushion over Marlborough, but there are then only eight points between second place and Purton, who sit in fifth.

With matches against three of the top four to come in the closing stages of the season, Bowler knows that their fate lies firmly in their own hands still.

“There is only one result in it between fifth, where we are, and first,” he said.

“From second to fifth there are eight points between us all so it is all very close and will make for a great run in. It is really good for the league and is making it very competitive this season.

“We have got Malmesbury who could be a banana skin and then Marlborough after that, which is going to be a very big game, and then the last two games we have Trowbridge and Marshfield.

“It is going to be really good for the last six weeks but it is very much in our own hands.

“Team morale is very good considering where we were last year. We lost a lot of players and we have got a good group this year who seem to be sticking together.”

Purton travel to Malmesbury tomorrow, and despite their hosts having picked up only one win from their 12 games this season, Bowler knows they can’t take their opponents lightly.

“You look at Calne, who were bottom of the league, and we thought that would be an easier game but it just shows that you can’t think that – they could have won that game,” said Bowler.

“We have got to make sure we are on it all the time and not go into the game believing we have got this in the bag because you never have at this level.

“There are always one or two players who can win a game so we have got to look to enter the match with the right intensity.”
