SWINDON Robins captain Jason Doyle scored a stunning 15-point maximum to send Australia through to the Speedway World Cup final in dramatic style tonight.

After finishing as runners-up behind Sweden in their semi-final on Tuesday, Doyle and his Aussie team were thrust into the last-chance saloon of the race-off at the National Speedway Stadium in Belle Vue, but the 30-year-old’s inspirational display helped book his nation’s place in Saturday’s battle to become champions of the world.

At the end of a nail-biting evening in Manchester, there was just one point between leaders Australia and second-placed Denmark heading into the final heat but Doyle, who already had four race victories to his name, scorched home from the gate to make it five wins from five rides, with the Aussies taking the win with 44 points, three ahead of the Danes (41).

Doyle and co will meet Alun Rossiter’s Great Britain, Poland and Sweden in Saturday’s World Cup final, which is also held at Belle Vue (7pm start).
