WESTBURY have been crowned WEPL Wiltshire champions after Saturday's nine-wicket win over Malmesbury was enough to ensure they could not be caught.

Alex Senneck’s team were the only team in the league who were able to see out their game, which meant Marshfield can no longer catch them as they had their game at Calne called off.

“We can’t be caught now with a lead of 29 points and just one league game left to play, it was a great we managed to get the game in with the weather,” said Westbury skipper Senneck.

“The last time we were beaten was on June 12. After a couple of defeats we managed to turn it around and win the league convincingly.”

The visitors won the toss and elected to bowl at Malmesbury, with Senneck’s men making short work of their opponents.

It was clear Westbury wanted to get the game won as soon as possible as they rattled through Malmesbury’s batting order for 74.

“The game was straight-forward, we won the toss and decided to bowl on what looked like a good deck,” added Senneck.

“We thought it was important for us to be in control given the conditions we had to play so we bowled Malmesbury out and set to work on their total.

“We went to bat and had a rain break but thankfully that didn’t affect things, it was after that we found out everyone around us had their games called off.”

With the rain looming Westbury needed to be quick if they were going to clinch the title.

Senneck’s side would only lose one wicket before chasing down the hosts' total, when Ben Whiting was caught for 31 with the score at 65.

Richard Mills chipped in with 30 not out and Jared McDonald contributed four, which was enough to claim the win and the crown.

“We were desperate to get the game on last week to complete the match and we thought that we might have the weather conspire against us but we managed to get the game on and found out it was actually the other games that had been affected by the weather,.” said Senneck.

Trowbridge's match at Purton was another victim of the elements.

Elsewhere, Warminster were unable to stop Lechlade claiming the Prem Two Glos/Wilts despite the weather forcing their game to be abandoned.

Warminster were at 48-6 before the rain intervened and Harvey Jupp was causing the most damage, claiming four wickets in total.
