A SUPERB Callum Parsons free-kick was enough to secure Swindon Supermarine a 2-1 win over Taunton Town on Saturday.

Marine boss Dave Webb knew his side had been in a contest as they avenged last season’s play-off defeat, even if they were not quite at there best at the Webb’s Wood Stadium.

Connor Waldon saw his first-half strike cancelled out by Matt Wright’s header in the second half before Parsons stepped up to clinch the winner.

The midfielder stepped up to take the set piece which was set just right around 25 yards out from goal and took it with aplomb as he found the top corner, to the delight of manager Webb.

“It is nice to see the ball not hit those conifers (behind the goal),” he said.

“I’ve said to him that he is on free-kick duty now. It was a fantastic free-kick with lots of movement on it and pace.

“Any time you beat Taunton, you know you have done enough to win.

“I didn’t think we were at our best by any means.

“It’s a big win for us. We want to stay in the top five and have got the FA Cup (third qualifying round tie against Welling) next weekend.

“I am really pleased we have won and have won at 70 per cent of what we are capable of.

“We did it in little spells, we had a 25 minute spell in the first half where we were excellent and really pulled them around and created chances.

“They then came back into the game and the second half was even really, but we did enough.

“They are not going to play at their best every week but it is a results business and we have won the game and I’ll take it.”

One setback for Marine was Ash Taylor suffering a hamstring injury.

“That is a massive blow for us,” added Webb.

“He has been playing exceptionally well and has been the rock of the defence alongside Zak but it gives another player another opportunity.

“Ryan Wood has come on and done okay when he came on, he has now got to get up to match fitness.

“We’ll have to see how bad Ash is, hopefully it is not too bad but we’ll have to let it settle down and assess it before Tuesday.”
