STRIKER Luke Norris sees no reason why Swindon Town shouldn’t be looking to go all the way in the Checkatrade Trophy when the competition resumes tomorrow.

The much-derided tournament enters the knockout stages this week, with Town playing host to League Two side Luton Town.

With Town having had a blank weekend courtesy of falling out of the FA Cup to non-league Eastleigh, and also going out of the EFL Cup at the first hurdle, the League Trophy, which has taken its share of knocks since its summer revamp and endured abysmal crowds to date, is now the club’s best hope of winning silverware this term.

Tomorrow’s game will be the last of the regional fixtures and with just four wins between themselves and a place at Wembley, Norris believes his teammates can dream of emulating Paolo Di Canio’s run to the final in 2012.

“It is still a cup competition and you still want to win every game you play,” said Norris, whose only goal since his summer move from Gillingham came in this competition, netting in the first half of the 1-1 draw away to Exeter.

“It’s still a professional fixture and we have got the chance, if we keep progressing, to play at Wembley.

“That’s a massive plus for us going forwards and I think it will be great for us to go on a run.

“Now there is no FA Cup, it’s a competition we can do well in.”

Norris believes Swindon can also draw inspiration from last year’s winners, Barnsley, who ended a six-game losing streak with victory over York in round three of the then named Johnstone’s Paint Trophy.

With the Tykes in the grasp of the relegation zone at the time in League One, that sparked a turnaround in fortunes that saw them not only lift the trophy last April, having beaten Oxford United, but also saw them return to the home of English football a month later and gain promotion to the Championship via the play-off final.

“Not even the players at the top level get to play at Wembley that often, only very few teams get to do it on a regular basis,” he added.

“For a side in League One, probably the only chance you get is through this competition or if you go up through the play-offs. It will be a massive opportunity.

“Barnsley went on a big losing streak but ended up somehow catching everyone and ended up getting promoted so hopefully we can follow that pattern, have a bad start but start picking up and go from there.”
