DEVIZES Town manager Darran Walters was happy to see his side halt a run of eight games without success in style as they dispatched Roman Glass St George 5-1 at the weekend.

Tom Slater’s brace, along with strikes from Ali Bradley, Jordon Matthews and Robert Mitchell, secured the win, with the hosts sauntering to a 3-0 lead by half-time.

Despite the visitors pulling a goal back through Joshua Morris shortly after the break, the margin of the hosts’ advantage was wide enough to record a first win in nine outings, to the relief of Walters.

“It was a much-needed three points but we played really well,” he said.

“We’ve been drawing games and they have been quite close, but we put it all together on Saturday and I was delighted with the team performance and the result.

“We dominated the game from start to finish, really.

“If we go in at half-time leading 2-0, there is still a little bit of doubt in our minds with recent results, but the third one was the cushion we needed to get over the line.

“They got a goal back about quarter-of-an-hour into the second half and we think: ‘here we go again'.

“But we got the fourth one and that killed the game off.

“Tom Slater up top; when he is in that kind of form, he is unplayable.

“He scored two and set the game up for us.”

With 10 games of their Toolstation First campaign remaining, Town sit comfortably in mid-table, but with only eight points separating themselves and the top six, Walters has eyes on moving up the league between now and the end of the season.

“We want to finish as high as we can,” added the Nursteed Road boss.

“We’ve got Wincanton this week, who are on the same amount of points as us, so it’s a bit of a cup final for us and we have got four games at home, so it’s a good opportunity to put some points on the board.

“We certainly want to get into the top 10.

“I think the top five is a bit out of our reach but it is there for us to give it a go really. We’ve got nothing to lose.”

Meanwhile, Chippenham Park made it three wins on the bounce as Ben Pring came off the bench to secure a 1-0 victory over 10-man Welton Rovers.

Malmesbury Victoria also finished their game with 10 men as they lost 3-1 to Westbury United at the Flying Monk Ground.
