HEAD coach Luke Williams is well aware that Swindon Town cannot rely on favours from anyone else in the fight to beat the drop in League One.

Town ended a run of five straight defeats with a goalless draw at home to Oldham Athletic a week ago but that return of one point in six games is the worst of any team in the division.

The Latcis and fellow strugglers Bury have both picked up form to climb out of the drop zone and even bottom side Coventry City – who Town travel to take on this afternoon – were able to claim victory last time out as they ended a 16-match winless streak.

Williams is desperate to see an upturn in fortunes for his side and admits that it is down to them to make sure of their own survival by the time the curtain comes down on the season in late April.

“It’s natural for everyone to want to look at other results, but what won’t happen is that all the other teams will fail to get to 50 points and we think we’re fine as we are,” said Williams.

“Nobody is going backwards and people will pick up points.

“We know that, if we pick up enough points, that we’ll be safe and that is what we must focus on.

“As soon as you start looking at other results, you can become too nervous or results go your way and you start to think everything is okay.

“We need to focus inwards and make sure we are doing our bit correctly.

“There is time and so we’ve got that opportunity now to put things right.”

A haul of 50 points was enough to keep Shrewsbury Town up last season as they finished fifth from bottom and Williams has set his sights on matching that tally with his side.

However, he is keen for Swindon to keep it simple and the only real target is taking three points at a time, starting against the Sky Blues at the Ricoh Arena today.

“I think the targets have got to be one big one, to get to at least 50 points,” said Williams.

“Other than that, there needs to be very short-term targets, which is to prepare correctly and be ready to go and beat Coventry.

“We don’t need to look too much further than that.”
