SWINDON Wildcats player-coach Aaron Nell admits there can be no let up from his side when they return to action this evening.

His troops will be buoyed from a four-point haul last weekend but having been humbled on the road by Bracknell Bees the Sunday prior, he is all too aware that there could be a sting in the tail if they take their eye off the ball.

The Bees travel to the Link Centre (5.45pm) this evening before Swindon travel to Guildford Flames in the English Premier League tomorrow.

With the new format for the play-offs this season, where the top eight teams are split into two pools of four, playing each other home and away, Nell knows a fluke result will not see them to the finals weekend in Coventry and consistency between now and then will be key.

“We’ve got five games left in the league now and we need to push towards the play-offs,” he said.

“You can’t just turn up and flick a switch. We’ve got to push now and we have got five games where we want to win as many as we can and be hot going into the play-offs.

“Who knows what can happen? It’s a longer play-off series but we want to be in good form going into them.

“We won’t approach them in a different way. They are different but we have got to be ready to play six massive games.

“You can have all the clichés you want but it is going to be a long old slog, whoever works the hardest, is quite simple, they’re going to win.

“It’s going to be a long, hopefully, three weeks and we’ve got to be ready for it.

“If we play like we did last weekend then we will have a good chance.

“We can’t step off the gas, we’ve got to keep on pushing all the way.

“Saturday night is another massive game. We can’t step back because we have had a four-point weekend.”

In a season where the Wildcats have been ravaged by injury, with Nell, Callum Buglass, Mark Smith and Matt Selby all suffering season-ending injuries, the younger players have been forced to step up and be counted.

Nell has been left impressed by what they have brought to the table and their youthful exuberance could be another telling factor in the final push.

“The young players in this roster are very important,” he added.

“Jordan (Kelsall) scored again last weekend and Ben (Nethersell) got three assists in Sheffield.

“They’re a big part of our team now and part of our future.”
