SWINDON Town head coach Luke Williams felt his side would always carve out one telling chance as they snatched a last-gasp win over Millwall to revitalise their League One survival fight this afternoon.

Midfielder Conor Thomas struck deep into stoppage time to earn a deserved 1-0 win over the play-off chasing Lions at the County Ground.

Town were by far the more adventurous side and although they did not create too many clear-cut opportunities, Williams felt that if his team kept plugging away, they would eventually break down their visitors’ resistance.

“We kept putting the ball into the box and we kept trying to break when there was an opportunity, so I felt like there was hope (that we would score),” said Williams.

“It was very good (defensively). We had to pay a huge amount of respect to the front two of Millwall. We know how good they are and they can hurt you.

“The team are so bright and they look for those boys very quickly if you lose the ball. They are both willing runners, they can both finish and they can provide for each other.

“It meant that we weren’t full of width as we often are, there weren’t as many players charging into the attacks but we were safer and we were more secure behind the ball.

“The difficulty is that you feel you may not be able to get a goal but fortunately, we did.

“We made a couple of changes later in the game to put some more aggressive attacking players in because we know that a draw is not really enough at this moment, we knew we had to try to win.

“After a good solid defensive display, we tried to introduce a bit of pace and attacking flair.”

Having seen his side ship two goals in the dying stages to go down 2-1 at Bradford City seven days earlier, Williams took particular relish from Town’s own dramatic late heroics.

“It is the dream for me,” said Williams.

“I would like us to never ever score unless the board has just gone up because I know my team are familiar with giving away a lead late in a game and allowing the opposition to have a reaction.

“To score that late and for the whistle to go almost immediately, that is my dream come true.”
