JOHN Costello expects to see a happier and calmer Jamie Cox when he makes his return to the ring this weekend.

The Swindon southpaw makes his Matchroom Boxing bow at Bramall Lane in Sheffield on Saturday on the undercard of Kell Brook’s IBF world welterweight title defence against American Errol Spence live on Sky Sports Box Office.

The 30-year-old, who joined Eddie Hearn’s stable earlier this month, faces former English middleweight champion Lewis Taylor for the WBA super-middleweight inter-continental title.

And while the former Walcot amateur is eager to get back into the ring, his trainer Costello feels that his charge will be in a much better place following his last fight in October when he took a wide 98-86 decision in a an ugly war with Argentina’s Martin Fidel Rios.

Although the 2006 Commonwealth Games gold medallist had two points deducted that night in Bolton, his opponent had three and was also sent to the canvas in the third round.

“Jamie wants to fight anyone, he want to face the best in the division,” Costello told the Advertiser.

“In his last fight he can’t have had a worse opponent in Martin Fidel Rios. He is renowned for dirty tricks.

“He had three warnings in that fight and if you get three warnings then you should be disqualified.

“But Phil Edwards (referee) had so much going on during that fight you can’t blame him – I missed it too.

“If I had noticed that I would have brought it up. Jamie won that fight by a landslide, and he wasn’t great that night.

“There were so many things that happened in the build-up, he nearly pulled out. He was just so frustrated and we saw that in his temperament that night.

“The fight was supposed to be for the WBO inter-continental title, we weren’t really concerned about the title, but it would have given Jamie his (world) ranking back with the WBO.

“Then all of a sudden we were told it wasn’t for the belt but it was still a 10 round fight, then there was a change in venue, all sorts of things happened. But that is gone now.”

During the build to Saturday night’s fight, Cox has been out in the Canary Islands sparring Brook in Fuerteventura with the trainer getting glowing reports of how the former WBO European super-middleweight champion did.

“Jamie can’t wait to get going again and doing what he does best,” he added.

“This is the happiest that I have seen Jamie in years, he has been electric in the gym.

“Jamie has been out sparring with Kell Brook and everyone out there said he was electric.

“When Jamie spars, that’s what it’s like, they say how good he is
