THE enthusiasm, vigour and vision of new manager David Flitcroft has already given Swindon Town a much-needed shot of adrenaline, according to chairman Lee Power.

The former Bury boss has quickly settled into the role, touring the club’s training facilities with general manager Steve Anderson, as well as getting himself acquainted with club staff before and after his introductory press conference last week, with the fixtures and part of the pre-schedule announced yesterday.

His arrival has delivered a welcome summer shot in the arm for an organisation which was at a low ebb following relegation to League Two, the departures of head coach Luke Williams and assistant Ross Embleton as well as the inevitable disbanding of last season’s squad.

Flitcroft’s personality has already made a considerable impression at the County Ground, with Power believing that vindicates his decision to secure the services of the 43-year-old for the Town rebuilding job.

“One million per cent that’s what it needed and I think that’s what attracted me,’’ said Power. “His CV speaks for itself but as soon as we got on the phone, we were laughing and joking.

“We’re very similar people. We’re not from a privileged upbringing. We’ve had to go and work hard for what we’ve got. Maybe that’s what been missing a little bit.’’ Power hopes the new man’s arrival will alter the trajectory of his tenure, which he admits took a downward turn following the highs of the 2015 League One play-off final appearance.

“It’s difficult because it (the last campaign) was a relegation season so you don’t expect the place to be full of optimism and bouncing,’’ he added.

“The first season we came in, we got to the (League One) play-off final (in 2015) and we couldn’t build on that and it’s been difficult since.

“I think having David around the place, even the staff would tell you that there’s a completely different feel to the club.

“There’s a lot of optimism and everybody seems to have a bit more of a smile on their face.

“Hopefully, when the players start coming through the door, that will get relayed on to them.

“All we can do as a football club is try and get the best team possible out on the pitch and try and make the supporters proud.

“We feel we’ve got the right man now to try and get us back at the first attempt and David will be doing everything he can to get us back into League One.’’
