ROYAL Wootton Bassett captain Darren Beasant can’t quite believe the start his side have made to the WEPL Wiltshire season, as they aim to maintain their faultless record against Purton.

Three games into the campaign, Beasant has navigated his troops to victories over Devizes, Marlborough and Marshfield respectively.

This weekend Bassett tackle Purton and despite the good start to the season, Beasant wants his players to remain grounded.

“We are delighted with the start we have had,” he said.

“Last season as our first year back in the WEPL, the ambition was to stay in it. Having been out for a few years, you are not really sure where you stand.

“We stayed up quite comfortably in the end and now we want another solid season, and you can’t really hope for any more than three wins from three at the start of the year.

“It takes a bit of pressure off and we aren’t scratching around hoping to get off the mark.

“It’s still too early to alter our ambitions. When you get to week nine or 10 and have played each of the other teams, then you can start to tell how it might shape up.

“We will just keep taking it week by week and see how we stand at the end.”

Their most recent triumph, over Devizes, earned them second spot in the early standings, three points behind Chippenham.

However, Beasant says every fixture has a familiar feel about it as they turn their attention to Arron Lee’s Purton side.

“It’s such a tough league and everyone can beat everyone. You wouldn’t want to be the pools panel trying to predict the results,” said Beasant.

“Because it’s a Wiltshire division, all the teams are close together and it feels like you have a derby almost every week. All the players know each other, which is what makes it a great league to play in.

“Last season I think we won pretty comfortably at Purton’s place and then they came to us and did the same. That’s the way the league is.”

Elsewhere in the league, Swindon, who are without a win, play host to Marlborough at the County Ground.
