ADAM Mitchell fell two runs short of a century as Corsham claimed an emphatic 111-run success at home to Rockhampton in Premier Two Glos/Wilts.

Opener Mitchell scored 98 off 100 balls to help Tom Foley’s side post a hefty 320-7 off their 50 overs, while Tom Abbott (62) and Tom Smith (44) also made telling contributions as Rockhampton’s Sam Jukes claimed 4-64.

Captain Foley then picked up three wickets when Corsham took to the field, although that was bettered by his father Richard’s return of 4-38 as Rockhampton were still well short of the target on 209-8 after their 50 overs.

Skipper Foley said: “Adam batted really well and didn’t give any chances away. He deserved a hundred but because of him, others were able to bat freely around him.

“Both Tom Abbott and Tom Smith batted really well too and to get to 320 was lovely, that’s a great score to defend. I would have settled for 225 at the start, so it shows how well the guys did.

“It was a strange approach from Rockhampton as they didn’t really come out and go for it. They seemed to be focussed on getting batting points, but we still picked up eight wickets.”

The win was Corsham’s first in four weeks and moved them to seventh in the table.

“We have been in every game so far this season. Maybe we could have won a couple more, but you can’t win them all,” said Foley.

“We are still a relatively new team and hopefully this is a good stepping stone for us to push on from now.”

Elsewhere, Trowbridge suffered a second straight defeat as they went down by 50 runs away at Burbage & Easton Royal.

After winning the toss and electing to bat, Burbage could not quite last their full 50 overs as they were dismissed for 188 with three balls remaining.

Captain David Cope top scored with 36 as Tom Weaver led the Trowbridge attack, returning figures of 3-34.

There were also three wickets each for James Lavis, Adam Lavis and Fraser Gordon when Burbage got their hands on the ball as the visitors were bowled out for 138 inside 32 overs, despite resistance from Mike Reynolds (45) and Tom Oakley (42).

There was also disappointment for Westbury & District as they lost by six wickets at home to Dumbleton.

After winning the toss and electing to bat, Westbury were in trouble early on as they slipped to 54-5 before Dan Gill’s 52 saw them finish on 194-8.

Rupert Salmon then led the Dumbleton reply as his unbeaten 73 guided the visitors to their target with 10 overs to spare, finishing on 195-6.
