WILTSHIRE skipper Ed Young says the fact that his side are unable to qualify for the knockout stages of the Unicorns Twenty20 has not dampened their spirits ahead of the final round of group games.

Young’s side have won just one of six matches in Group Four so far and sign off with a home double-header against Cornwall at Calne on Sunday.

Although even a twin win for the county may not be enough to prevent them from finishing bottom of their pool, Young says there is still plenty riding on the Cornwall contests.

“Points-wise and in terms of progression, there is nothing really to play for, but you want everyone to have a pride in the performance and to go out there to win no matter what is at stake,” said Young.

“You are always trying to build momentum and positivity, and that’s what we will look to do.

“We have been too inconsistent so far. We have played some fantastic cricket in spells during matches, but just for not a long enough period of time.

“We want a strong finish to this Twenty20 campaign and hopefully we can do that by picking up a couple of good results this weekend.”

This weekend’s matches are Wiltshire’s last in the one-day format before they begin their Unicorns Championship Western Division challenge on June 24 with a trip to Dorset.

Although Young already has one eye on what is ahead, it will be difficult to implement any ideas for that match when they face Cornwall at Beversbrook.

“You have always got the longer format your mind, in terms of the team you want and who is going to be available,” said Young.

“But white-ball cricket in coloured kit is always going to have a different approach to what there would be in a three-day game.”

Young and coach Tom Morton have attempted to blood young talent into the Wiltshire team during the Twenty20 campaign in an effort to improve the foundations of the county set-up.

“It’s been a good opportunity for us to give some younger players a go and stake their claim,” said Young.

“In any club or team, you are always trying to build depth. The more players we have that are capable and comfortable at this level, then the better we will be.

“We have got to find that balance between youth and experience because there is no point flooding the team with good young players if there is not that experience there to guide them and help them out.

“It is a hard balance to get right.”
