PURTON captain Aaron Lee says his side must start to make more of an impression with the bat if they are to stay competitive in WEPL Wiltshire.

It has been a challenging start to the season for Purton so far, with Lee’s men recording three wins and four defeats in their opening seven contests.

After getting a much-needed win over bottom-of-the-league Marlborough last weekend, the Purton skipper says it is imperative his side start to post bigger scores with the bat or they could be in danger of drifting away from the top half of the table, starting in Saturday’s clash at home to Devizes.

“It has been a bit of a tough time for us for a few weeks, so it was good to get the win last time out,” said Purton.

“We have just really struggled with the bat and not got enough runs on the board.

“With the ball and in the field we have been OK, it’s been with the bat that we have not been good enough, so it was nice to set that right against Marlborough.

“We have got to build on that win now and get a little bit of momentum going.

“We have the big game against Swindon coming up next weekend, so it is important for us to try to go into that with some results and confidence behind us.

“We are not where we want to be but we have got to accept where we are.

“The league is beginning to break up into two divisions now, so it is important for us to try to push ourselves towards the top one.”

Lee is expecting a big challenge against Devizes and says his troops have been fully briefed on who to look out for.

“We know when we play our best cricket we are a match for anyone, and we will go into the Devizes game confident,” he added.

“We know who their danger men are – Tom Grant, their captain, is a fantastic player.

“But we have to back ourselves to get a positive result.”

Meanwhile, fellow WEPL Wiltshire sides Swindon and Royal Wootton Bassett are also in action at the weekend.

Fourth-placed Swindon make the short trip to Calne, while Bassett will hope to keep the pressure on league leaders Warminster with a win over Chippenham.

In Prem Two Glos/Wilts, Freddie Martin’s Lechlade will hope to follow up their first win of the season last weekend with another victory away to in-form Burbage & Easton Royal, who have only lost once in their last five games.
