Devizes Town 2, Calne Town 1

DEVIZES Town gained revenge for their Wiltshire Senior Cup quarter-final exit at the hands of Calne Town by beating the Lillywhites 2-1 in the Toolstation League Premier Division on Tuesday.

Calne old boy Daine O'Connor came back to haunt his former club, scoring in the last minute to give Paul Thompson's side the win.

O'Connor played only one game for Calne, the 2-1 defeat to Corsham Town on Boxing Day, but showed his former side what they were missing on Tuesday.

O'Connor ran onto a pass from Robbie Mitchell and his shot struck Gary Blackwood and deflected into the corner.

Lee McMullen had earlier put Devizes 1-0 up after 15 minutes, before Calne equalised two minutes later.

But O'Connor struck with seconds left to give his side a late win.

Devizes assistant boss Steve Hale said: "It was a strange one. Most of the first half I felt Calne dominated.

"We needed to up our work rate by 10 or 15 per cent and after about the first five or 10 minutes of the second half we got right into the game.

"It looked like it was going to peter out but Daine shot and there was 90 minutes on the watch. It was a great victory from that point of view."

Hale said although he enjoyed the victory, he still wished they had beaten Calne in the Wilts Senior Cup quarter final.

Hale said: "It's a double-edged sword. We've done the double over Calne in the league but they have beaten us in the cup.

"In some respects I would rather have lost one of the league games and won the cup game instead, because realistically we're not going to win the league.

"We've had a very good week. The lads have been fantastic. We're carrying some injuries and against Chard, which is always a difficult place to go, to win 4-1 was fantastic.

"The work rate of the lads was superb. Total credit to the lads to pull off six points in a week."

Calne assistant boss Simon Hillier said: "On reflection they possibly did just enough to deserve it. Having said that we were disappointed with the goal we gave away and we didn't do ourselves justice in the second half.

"To win any game you have to show commitment and desire and we didn't show enough of that in the second half.

"There is still plenty of points to play for and we went into that game to win it. We were getting ourselves on a run, but they outfought us and that's what got them the result in the end.

"The Wilts Senior Cup is high on our priorities but we've got to finish as high in the league as we can."

Calne beat Barnstaple Town 2-0 away on Saturday courtesy of goals from Gary Blackwood and Ben Moore.
