Double joy for Bassett Ladies

9:39am Monday 10th March 2008

Hockey: Wootton Bassett Ladies 1st & 2nd XI's picked up three valuable points each in highly successful weekend games.

The 1st XI scored a cracking 4 - 2 victory over a strong Bristol University side who are four places higher in West Clubs Premier Div 2. In the first thirty minutes, both sides had chances in open play, and Bristol scored first. Wootton Bassett stepped up their attack and equalised before half time, when captain Helen Siviter scored a fine goal following excellent play by Lisa Turner and Suzanne Montgomery. Wootton Bassett began the second half confidently and went ahead with a goal from Katy Cox, who subsequently scored again after a magnificent solo effort in which she took the ball from the centre line and drove it home. Bristol University retaliated vigorously and reduced the deficit to 3 - 2, but the home side's tremendous teamwork yielded their fourth goal, scored by Vicky Field, to seal the win. Sterling work by Laura Brown, Sue Lee, Tracy Fieldsend, Helen Siviter, Sammy Field, Suzanne Montgomery, Emma Langdon, Zara Salisbury, and Helen Butt, in defence, and by forwards Lisa Turner, Katy Cox and Vicky Field, deserves special mention. Katy Cox was Player of the Match.

This Saturday, the 1st XI will travel to Cornwall to play Bude.

The 2nd XI defeated Gloucester 5 - 2, away, in Severn Div 1. Wootton Bassett captain Sarah Scarth ensured a 1 - 1 score at half time. In the second half, the visitors gave a brilliant display to increase their tally to five, while Gloucester managed to pull back only one. Two goals were scored by Player of the Match Maria Vincent, and the others by Becky Thomas and Sammy Jennings. This Saturday Wootton Bassett 2nds will play Cheltenham Civil Service at home, 11am.

Wootton Bassett 3rd XI home game against Lansdown in Severn Div 3 was cancelled by the opposition, who were unable to muster a full side. On Saturday Wootton Bassett will play Painswick, away.

Wootton Bassett were runners-up in the Wiltshire Veterans' Championships at Salisbury on Sunday, when they drew 2 = 2 with Melksham (scorers Rachael Fairbanks and Sue Davies) and lost 2 - 1 (scorer Sammy Jennings) against Salisbury, the ultimate champions.
