Grand National winners to parade at Wincanton

5:10am Tuesday 15th April 2008

Two Grand National winners will be parading at Wincanton Racecourse's next meeting on Sunday April 20.

This year's John Smiths Grand National winner, Comply or Die, will be parading alongside Miinnehoma, winner of the 1994 Grand National at 3pm.

Nine-year-old Comply or Die, trained locally by David Pipe, won jump racing's most famous horse race earlier this month, while Miinnehoma was a winner for Martin Pipe, David's father.

Martin and David Pipe are the first father and son combination to have both won the race.

Sunday's Bathwick Tyres Countryside Day is one of the most popular race days of Wincanton Racecourse's fixture list and is themed to celebrate the very best that the Somerset countryside boasts, alongside six races.

The feature race of the day is the Bathwick Tyres Taunton Handicap Steeple Chase which runs over two miles and boasts a £10,000 prize fund.

Bathwick Tyres are keen supporters of Wincanton Racecourse and have sponsored the entire racecard.

The first race starts at 2.20pm and the last at 4.50pm. The gates open at 11.30am.

Steven Clarke, managing director of Wincanton Racecourse, said: "Countryside Day is always one of our most popular fixtures of the entire season.

"Bathwick Tyres sponsor this event each year and every year the event gets bigger and better than ever. The attendance of two Grand National champions from the Pipe yard will make this one of our best yet.

"We are now nearing the end of the season and this event provides a great way to ensure the season continues on a high, right to the very end."

Under 16s gain free entry to the course while adult prices on the day start at just £7. There is plenty of parking free of charge within the grounds.
