GREENDOWN School held the inaugural bursary awards presentation last week, with grants of up to £500 being handed out to Swindon's stars of the future, writes AARON LEIGHFIELD.
In conjunction with Swindon School Sport Partnership, children aged between 11 and 16 who had already reached a county standard within their chosen sport were considered.
A total of 22 young sports stars picked up awards and the evening was heralded by Partnership manager Juliet Rayden.
She said: "To reach the highest level it takes a great deal of dedication and family support.
"In most cases, the coaching, training and competition costs are very demanding and these grants can provide some financial assistance to these committed young sports stars.
"We are delighted to provide these bursaries, and in future, we hope to be able to support even more children."
The School Sport Partnership is a national initiative and the key delivery mechanism of the Governments vision for the development of physical education and school sport.
The partnership receives government funding through the DFES to work towards a number of objectives - with the achievement of each school offering at least two hours high quality PE and school sport being our top priority.
