Youngsters ditch football and rugby for ultimate frisbee and cheerleading

ULTIMATE frisbee and cheerleading were just two of the activities that hundreds of youngsters from across Swindon took part in as part of National School Sports Week earlier this month.

Around 15 primary and secondary schools swapped their pens for PE kits as the Swindon School Sports Partnership organised action-packed days of exciting projects.

The primary schools enjoyed a day of Olympic-style athletics coaching as well as an introduction to cheerleading at the County Ground athletics track, while Greendown School played host to more cheerleading and an ultimate frisbee festival for secondary school pupils.

The events were hailed as a huge success by everyone who took part, and Swindon School Sport Partnership development manager Juliet Rayden said: "The Swindon events are a great way of getting the schools together.

"They provide yet another opportunity for young people to enjoy physical activity and to celebrate everything that has been achieved in Swindon this year."

Assistant partnership development manager, Andy Steckbeck, said: "Traditional sports such as football, rugby and netball just do not appeal to all children.

"Therefore it is very important that we provide a range of opportunities and choices so all young people can find something that they will enjoy and therefore develop an active lifestyle."
