Seniors march on to semi-finals

GOLF: Frome Golf Club seniors are through to the semi-finals of the Somerset Bowl county inter-club knockout competition after a convincing 4-1 victory over Long Sutton Golf Club played at Taunton and Pickeridge.

In rather blowy and drizzly conditions on a superb course Harold Lidbitter and Alan Vowell won 4 and 3, Rick Head and Derek Strudwick won 6 and 4, Rick Bird and Chris Shellard won 6 and 4, Guy Turner and Tony Birch won 2 and 1 and Ivan Love and Bob Mills narrowly lost 3 and 2.

This is an historic achievement for the seniors team who have never previously made it past the first round.

The annual Alan Vowell Challenge for seniors is played over two rounds in fourball, betterball format.

Winners after the two rounds were Reg Wheeler and Chris Shellard.

Guy Turner and Dave Mathews were the runners-up and Peter Harrison and Alistair Wood finished in third place.
