Devizes triumph at Pewsey tens

DEVIZES returned victorious from the Pewsey 10s competition after thrashing Melksham 29-0 in the final.

Spectators were treated to a feast of rugby from 8 teams each trying to lift the coveted silverware.

Devizes' first win was against Salisbury running out 52-0 winners. It was clear that the other teams in the competition would find it hard to live with the pace of young Colts Luke Rapson and Jorge Wadman in particular.

Devizes came back down to earth in their second group game against Melksham CAT.

The game was played immediately after the first one but the lack of rest could not be blamed for a headless performance against a strong and well organised Melksham side. Devizes went down 22-0.

The next game produced a much better performance and beat Pewsey II 43-7. Devizes were back on track for a semi final against a big and strong Swindon Old Boys side.

In a game that really epitomised what Devizes RFC is about, the team fought hard for everything, made every tackle and every loose ball was snatched by a man in a green shirt, and ran out 17-0 winners.

This win set up a final against Melksham and an opportunity gain revenge for the earlier defeat.

Devizes skipper Mike McCrum reminded his side that losing was not an option, and the team played some great rugby to disrupt the favourites and run out comfortable 29-0 winners.

McCrum said: It was a great way to put our pre-season preparation into another successful outing, following our good win over Dorchester last week "Numbers have been good and we now look forward to our final pre-season friendly against Tadley at Devizes on Saturday.''
