1:00pm Saturday 4th July 2009

A FOURBALL led by Ogbourne Downs club captain Stuart Shewry survived thunder, lightning and fatigue to complete a 24-hour golf marathon and raise more than £700 for good causes.

The quartet, also featuring club manager Kevin Pickett, pro Robert Ralph and junior organiser Keith Burke, played for a whole day straight, without sleep, using flashing golf balls, torches and mobile phones to see during the dark hours.

Pickett said: “The first four hours or so were played in beautiful sunshine, before night fell. There were many birdies, lots of pars and a few disasters, but spirits remained high throughout’’ Shewry & Co, who hatched the plan to complete the challenge during the winter, also came through thundery showers 15 hours into their task.

More than £700, which will go to the Prospect Foundation and Ogbourne’s juniors section, was raised, while Richard Thomas, Robert Leighfield, Andy Harrop, Don Cook and Richard Bungey drove buggies, ferried clubs and some of the players around the course.

CLUB champion Paul Kirk claimed Ogbourne Downs’ Bowly Trophy with a scored of 150, ahead of Rob Morland (151) and Nick Parkinson and Rob Leighfield (also 151).

Dino Torchia won the Ogbourne Cup with 134, ahead of Max Cheesley and Kirk (both 136)
