Injury-jinxed Adam Leighfield has vowed to make it into Chippenham Town’s first team this season despite breaking his leg for the second time in a year.
The 19-year-old was training with the Bluebirds in their first pre-season session last Thursday when he picked up the injury after putting his foot into a pothole during a routine run.
The incident brought back painful memories of this time last season when Leighfield, from Swindon, was also invited to train with Chippenham, only to suffer a bad fracture in a six-a-side competition which ruled him out for the season.
“It was like a sharp pain but I carried on running,” he said of his new injury.
“Then when I finished I just hit the floor and they had to call an ambulance.
“I missed last season because I got injured in a stupid six-a-side but I’m definitely confident I can come back from this.
“I’m not giving up now, no way. I’m not a quitter.”
The versatile left-sided player, who has played for New College Swindon, initially came to the attention of manager Adie Mings when he represented Wiltshire in a fixture at Hardenhuish Park two years ago.
Leighfield was in plaster for four months last year but is expected to be back in training by the end of August.
“I went to watch a few of their games last season when I was injured,” he said.
“I only want to play for Chippenham.”
Mings says that Leighfield will be given another chance to prove himself when he regains fitness.
“It’s a bit of a setback and disheartening for the lad,” he said.
“He’s only 19 though and we’ve had good reports on him. A lot of senior clubs were interested and we’ll be following his progress.”
