Angling round-up: Temperatures rise like the salmon at Chew

2:23pm Thursday 9th July 2009

The hot sunny conditions last week made fishing more difficult on the Bristol Water trout fisheries but generally catches held up well. At Chew Valley bank fishermen had success very early and late on with fish often on only inches of water.

Walley Bank, Woodford, North Shore and Wick are all well worth a try. Dries and small nymphs and buzzers are favourite fished high in the water. For boat fishing try the aerators and the weed beds in the daytime and the margins at night.

The constant movement off the aerators attracts fish in the warmer water where the water temperature is lower and more oxygenated. The fish are often near the surface but a sunk team of nymphs fished slowly will sometimes work well. Weed growth this year is exceptional over much of the lake. The weed is full of food so any small buzzer, Diawl Bach or Cruncher is a food general representation to try. Watch also for corixa feeders and fish chasing pin fry.

At Blagdon the story is similar to Chew. The North Bank is usually the best area to try as the deeper water and less weed means the fish come well inshore. Butcombe and Cheddar Water are also popular. Boat fishermen should stick to the deeper water except in ideal conditions or late evenings when there are some rising fish. At the Barrows daytime catches have fallen though the mouse experts still seem to be catching fairly well. Often it is very late in the evenings before much surface activity takes place.

Chew produced a total catch of 415 fish last week averaging 2 lb 4 oz topped by a brown of 4 lb 9 oz and rainbow 4 lb 5 oz with 24 limits. At Blagdon 432 fish averaging 2 lb 6 oz were recorded topped by a brown of 4 lb 0 oz and rainbow 5 lb 4 oz with 27 limits. The Barrows yielded 137 fish averaging 1 lb 12 oz topped by a brown of 3 lb 4 oz and rainbow 2 lb 2 oz.

The hot weather affected catches last week on the Wessex Water trout fisheries. At Clatworthy where 193 fish were taken the week started well with fish coming from the Dam area and also at Westcott Bay. Continuous thunder and 2 inches of rain on Wednesday changed things a bit. As the water rose and coloured up the fish moved to deeper water. Pete Clough took a 4 lb 2 oz rainbow while Andy Strawbridge took s five fish limit for 16 lb 11 oz. At Hawkridge 119 fish were taken. Bob Price took a five fish limit for 12 lb 2 oz . Fish are being caught on Black Lures, Damsels, Pheasant tail Nymphs and Gold Ribbed Hares Ear. 209 fish were caught at Sutton Bingham last week where boats fished better generally just off the air line. The fish taken from the bank seemed to come in the mornings before it became bright. Top bag of the week weighed 13 lb 6 oz taken by Jim O’Brien from a boat. Dave Frances took a 4 lb 2 oz rainbow.
