NETBALL: Poole too good for Lawn

8:30am Thursday 26th November 2009

LAWN Netball Club fought back bravely before eventually suffering defeat against Poole Aquarians in Regional League One.

Victory against current leaders Poole would have put Lawn back into contention for the league title.

And the match started in Lawn’s favour as Tanya McMinn took advantage of numerous Poole mistakes early on.

However, Lawn struggled to break through Poole’s strong defensive unit and eventually the south coast side strolled into a healthy lead.

Coach Kerrie Easey made changes going into the third quarter and Lawn clawed the deficit back to just 10 before Poole regrouped and eventually saw the game out 50-28.

Raychem, in their first year in the league, jumped up to sixth place with a 59-42 win over Exeter.

In Regional League Two, all the Swindon teams endured a bad weekend.

Pinehurst travelled to second-placed Devon to take on Carol Anne but in a low-scoring game lost 31-32.

Meanwhile Lawn took on sixth-placed Trident and also lost by 10 goals, 53-43.

Elsewhere, Moredon faced the daunting challenge of Team Bath A, who have yet to be defeated and are top of the league, eventually losing 60-16.

Lawn face Team Bath A on Saturday at 12.30pm at St Joseph’s College whilst Moredon take on the in-form Bournemouth at 2.30pm and Pinehurst will travel to Bristol to take on Cosmos.

In the Swindon and District Netball League, Abbey Meads are top of Division One after beating Park A 45-37.

The result ensures Abbey Meads a place in the end of season play-offs to qualify for the Regional League.

Elsewhere, Lawn A kept the pressure on by beating Delta Blue 45-33 as did Raychem A, beating Nationwide 54 – 32.

In Division Two, previous league leaders Lawn B narrowly lost out to Pinehurst B, 37-34, which throws open the title race.

Burmah A continued their winning ways when they took on Park B and won 50-36.

Abbey Meads B had a good win in Division Three, beating Kennet Valley 41-17, whilst league leaders Raychem C were awarded a walkover against Highworth D.

In Division Four, joint leaders Pinehurst C and Croft B both maintained their winning ways with victories over Burmah C and Ferndale B respectively, whilst Abbey Meads C kept the pressure on by beating Lawn E 35 – 27.

Division Five almost saw a clean sweep for Abbey Meads Netball Club when their D team took on Lawn F, in a closely fought match, Lawn eventually winning 31-28.
