Schoolboys get active

8:40am Tuesday 9th February 2010

THE Swindon School Sport Partnership held its first ever ‘Boys Active’ event on Thursday for boys disengaged from physical education and school sport.

Over 150 pupils from 12 secondary schools attended and enjoyed a day of coaching in activities that are not traditionally delivered in schools.

The boys selected which activities they would like to try from martial arts, boxing, badminton, water polo, body pump, rock-it ball, trampolining, tennis, squash, basketball and ultimate frisbee. On the day, they took part in three different sessions, all delivered by some of the leading coaches operating in Swindon schools.

The aim of the day was to inspire the boys to get more active in future. All of the schools will now be supported by the partnership to establish a new sports club in their school.

Funding will be made available to the schools to assist with the purchase of equipment of the hire of specialist coaches to deliver.

“One of the core aims of the Swindon School Sport Partnership is to get children more active, particular through after school clubs,” said a spokesman.

“The provision of ‘alternative’ activities is a great way of appealing to pupils not interested in traditional school sports.

“We are confident there is something that most people will enjoy. We hope events such as this highlight to schools and their pupils the range of possibilities that are available.”

Schools that attended were Commonweal, Dorcan, Swindon Academy, Greendown, Isambard, Kingsdown, Ridgeway, Nova Hreod, St Luke’s, St Joseph’s, Uplands and Warneford.
