RUGBY: Warminster 37 Wimborne 2nd 8

WARMINSTER exorcised the demons of three defeats with a comprehensive triumph.

Unlike previous weeks, the amber blues were out of the blocks with purpose and, from the first whistle, put Wimborne under intense pressure.

This resulted in a try within five minutes when Jimmy Woznica scored a typical scrum-half try with a sniping run. Gavin Pratt converted.

Wimborne responded as they found a gaping hole in the defence and took advantage to score a try and a penalty following a home infringement gave them a one-point lead at half time.

However, the second half saw Warminster back playing the way they had done early season.

Number eight Dave Coleman put Warminster ahead with yet another typical tr, bursting from the back of a ruck and taking three defenders over with him to dot down for the second week in a row.

Pratt added the conversion to make it 14-8 and Warminster didn’t look back.

A third try was soon to follow when centre Rob Bell scored an excellent individual effort.

From halfway Bell gathered the ball and put in a grubber kick, showing a great turn of pace to re-gather the ball and outstrip the covering defence to dive over. The conversion was added.

The amber blues continued to pile on the pressure with strong runs from replacements Tiko Vaniqi and the returning veteran Steve Bond but the next two scores came from Pratt penalties.

A fourth try was not far round the corner when full back Dave Jessup joined the back line at pace and powered over.

And the fifth and final try came from the ever green prop Andy Clarke from close range as Warminster, who host Swanage & Wareham 2nd on Saturday, said farewell to flanker and player of the year Luke Phillips, who was playing his last game before starting a new career in the RAF.
