SUPERMARINE ended Wootton Bassett 2nds’ three-game winning streak with a 24-10 victory over the Stoneover Lane outfit in Dorset and Wilts 1 North on Saturday.
After stuttering from the off and falling 10-0 behind early on, Marine turned the game on its head to score three unanswered tries in registering their third win in five games.
Player-coach Sean Millwaters, pictured below, who maintained a 100 per cent conversion rate with the boot against his former side, put the success down to good planning.
Marine worked throughout the week on negating the impact of Bassett’s half-backs and centres, and Millwaters claimed practise, in this case, made perfect.
“Bassett were much-improved from when we met them earlier in the season, but that’s what we expected,” he said.
“The guys worked hard in training to come up with a gameplan to counter theirs and it paid off.
“They may have been much better than earlier in the year, but so were we.”
Matt Brandon, Jamie Barrett and Matt Dickens touched down for Marine, who are now well-placed to consolidate fifth place, a significant achievement given the situation the club found itself in a little over 12 months ago.
“We couldn’t get anyone to watch us then,” said Millwaters. “Now we have the Corsham coaches coming to look at us before our game this week.
“Our aim this year has always been top six, and we hope to go unbeaten until the end of the season to do that.”
