WITH a mid-table finish secured, Cirencester continued to flounder towards the end of the season with a 5-2 defeat to Newent on Saturday.
The early exchanges saw chances for both teams, with Suneil Ravel keeping Newent out with a number of fine saves.
However, Newent’s opener came from a quick breakaway, with the Ciren defence too far upfield to make up the lost ground.
A further defensive lapse let Newent score again before the break, following a missed clearance from the short corner.
Newent’s short corner routine was to account for a further two goals in the second half, much to Ciren’s disappointment, before the hosts again caught the visitors on the break to add the fifth.
As the game opened up, the midfield of Steve Kelly and Tom Groombridge began to assert themselves on Newent and Cirencester hit back in the final quarter of the match.
Andy McGrath provided Ollie Latter with a superb pass which Latter forced home.
A further consolation goal followed minutes later, with McGrath again the provider for Latter, who exchanged a simple return with Simon Dicker before a magnificent strike left the keeper grasping at thin air.
Cirencester Ladies 2nds drew 0-0 at home with Bourton Vale.
The visitors saw many fine shots saved by Laura Peskett, who had an excellent day in goal for the home side.
Sarah Harvey and Rowena Marriott played particularly creatively in midfield as Ciren took command in the second period.
The hosts created many scoring chances but, like their opposition, were thwarted at the last.
Cirencester Ladies crashed out of the EHA Vase after losing 6-1 to a strong Worthing side on Sunday.
Cirencester dominated the first half, only to see key decisions going against them. Against the run of play, Worthing scored first from a penalty flick after Vickie Rawlings was adjudged to have stopped the ball on the goal line with her foot.
Ciren hit back almost immediately with a well-worked goal from Lynsey Brown.
A superb strike on goal by Anna Scrivens was then ruled out for another foot offence.
The home side forced numerous short corners but were unable to convert and went in level at half time.
The second half, however, was all Worthing. They appeared a different side and controlled all parts of the pitch, scoring five goals to leave the home side well and truly down and out.
