HARDENHUISH Park hotshot Lewis Powell doesn’t want the season to end after helping Chippenham Town extend their unbeaten run to nine matches.
The Chippenham Town striker netted his 17th and 18th league goals in Tuesday night’s 4-2 win over Tiverton Town and is comfortably the Bluebirds’ top scorer this season.
Town moved to within one place of the Zamaretto League Premier Division play-off spots as a result of the win and can heap more pressure on the side’s above them by beating struggling Bedford at home on Saturday.
“The way things are going I really don’t want the season to end at the moment,” admitted Powell.
“I’ve worked hard in pre-season, got myself fit and not given myself any time to be tired.
“I’ve tried to make my own luck and sometimes things just go well for you as a striker. You get patches like that but there’ll also come a time when I can’t hit a barn door and when that happens you’ve got to keep on working hard and you’ll turn the corner.”
The in-form striker says that competition for places has helped his own form.
“We need to keep everyone on their toes because of the run we’re on and the competition for places is healthy,” he said.
“Griffo (Alan Griffin) deserved a goal against Tiverton because he’s worked his socks off.
“He’s been unlucky not to play in the last few games but (Shaun) Benison has done well when he’s come in and (Ben) Highmore aswell.
“It all helps to push us to where we want to be at the end of the season.”
Powell hailed the squad’s belief after they again came from behind to beat Tiverton.
“We’ve got a great team spirit here and in the last couple of weeks, when we’ve gone behind weve worked hard and come back,” said the Bluebirds striker.
“A few times in the first half of the season we were crumbling a bit when we were under the cosh and I think it came from a little bit of a lack of belief.
“But once we got our first win where we came from behind against Evesham United, we knew we could do it and we carried it on from there.
“The boys have got great character.”
Chippenham manager Adie Mings hopes to be back in his technical area when his side host Bedford.
The Bluebirds chief has been sidelined with illness and has watched his team’s last four games from the stands while coaches Gary Kemp and Matt Bown took charge of the team.
