WILTSHIRE SENIOR CUP: Cup dream ends for Melksham with semi-shocker

WAYNE Thorne drowned his sorrows at the Cheltenham Festival yesterday after Melksham’s last hopes of a silver lining to a tough season were swept away at Warminster Town’s Weymouth Street ground on Tuesday night.

The Conigre side were emphatically dumped out of the Wiltshire Senior Cup in the last-four stage as their Wessex League rivals booked their place in the final.

Thorne admitted his side paid the price for failing to make the most of a dominant opening quarter, during which they struck bar and post before Laverstock grabbed the advantage.

The manager said: “It was just typical of our season.

“We’re downheartened because we dominated the first 20 minutes, didn’t score, then they scored through their first attack.

“Technically, we’re good enough, but we don’t work hard enough without the ball.’’ Dan Lardner briefly gave Melksham hope when he scored to make it 2-1, only for Laverstock to respond immediately to restore their two-goal advantage.

A red card for Melksham keeper Darren Chitty merely rubbed salt into the wounds as Laverstock eased clear to a comfortable victory.

Thorne said: “We were really hoping to make the final to try and get a trophy.

“That’s gone now and the focus has to be staying in the league.

“We’ve got eight games left to get it done.’’
