Brickley rules out promotion

WESTBURY UNITED:
Westbury United 5, Shrewton United 0

WESTBURY United boss Paul Brickley is refusing to get carried away after seeing his side continue their rich vein of form on Tuesday.

A hat-trick from striker Wayne Wheeler helped the White Horse men to their fourth consecutive big home win as they moved up to eighth in the Toolstation League Division One.

In their last four games at Meadow Lane Westbury have now scored 21 goals without reply, but Brickley insists there will be no complacency ahead of tomorrow's trip to Chard.

He said: "We have been quite good in the last couple of weeks and it doesn't surprise me because we have been working hard and it is still starting to come together.

"We have had a blip in between but we are working hard for each other and this season is rapidly becoming a big team effort.

"I am not looking at the league table though. We would like to finish in the top six, but I will not talk about promotion.

"I have seen it all before when the team is going well and then it all backfires on you. We have a young side and I don't want to put any pressure on them. We will take each game as it comes."

After a slow start, Wheeler fired Westbury ahead after 15 minutes with a low finish past Adam Burwell after Matty Bown's cross into the box.

The lead was doubled minutes later as Shrewton were torn apart by a pacy passing attack that started on the left, involved Pete Ayton, Paul Beavers and Wheeler, and ended with Aaron Billett planting a shot into the net from the edge of the area.

Shrewton created a few half chances but were kept largely at bay by Mark Pearce, Steve Seals and Lee Morgan, with Nick Beales and David Thompson working hard to break up play in the centre of midfield.

Goalkeeper Nick Evans denied Dean Foot early in the second half and soon after he brilliantly parried Jessie Walters' strike to keep the two goal lead intact.

Westbury effectively sealed victory after 68 minutes when Beales' through ball released Wheeler and, with just Burwell to beat, he powered the ball into the corner of the goal.

Two further excellent goals followed as Westbury turned on the style in a late Christmas present to the home faithful.

Bown held off his marker before sliding to the ball to Wheeler. The striker's pace created another one on one opening and, as Burwell went to ground, he whipped the ball round the goalkeeper before adding his customary somersault to celebrate his hat-trick.

Bown got his deserved goal when he beat his marker and finished to complete the rout.
