Cox versus Khan!

BOXING:JAMIE Cox will meet Amir Khan, according to the Bolton boxer's father, writes STEVE BUTT.

Although Cox claims he will stay within the amateur ranks in pursuit of a gold medal at the 2008 Bejing Olympics, Khan's father Shah says he wants his son to fight Swindon's Commonthwealth Games hero.

"It is a fight that will happen," said Khan's father. "I want it to happen and I think one day it will happen."

Khan's father was full of praise for 19-year-old Cox after his fantastic achievement at the Commonwealths and believes he has a great future in the sport.

"Jamie Cox has done really well at the Commonwealth Games as have all the England boxers. He is a very good fighter and when he turns professional I am sure that a fight between him and Amir will happen.

"Obviously Jamie has to make a decision now on whether to turn pro or go to the Olympics. That decision is down to him. But whatever Jamie does he looks to have a good future as does Amir. A fight between the two would be a big, big fight."

Before the Commonwealth Games, Amir suggested that Cox would face a big decision after Melbourne but advised the Walcot southpaw against turning professional too soon.

He said: "It'll do him the world of good if he stays in amateur boxing."

And Cox's parents agree that staying on at amateur level could be best.

Jamie's mum Belinda said: "We'd love to see him go to Beijing. For him to turn pro the money would have to be substantial because it might be better to gain more amateur experience."

His dad Tony added: "He's only 19 he can stay amateur for two years and then turn pro."
