With the five day Glorious Goodwood fixture coming to a close this afternoon, Wiltshire trainer Richard Hannon , has kept the winners coming during the week.
On the opening day, he visited the winners’ enclosure with Zebedee, who won the Group 3 Molecomb Stakes and Martyr, winner of the Summer Stakes, both ridden by Richard Hughes.
Canford Cliffs turned in a stunning performance on day two, defeating Rip Van Winkle in the Group One Sussex Stakes once again saying the three-year-old was best horse he has ever trained.
The Wiltshire stable then completed a double on the day with King Torus in the Group 2 Veuve Cliquot Vintage Stakes.
On this afternoon’s Goodwood card, the Group One Blue Square Nassau Stakes is the feature race, backed up by the Stewards’ Cup over six furlongs.
The Group One event has attracted several smart performers. including the likely favourite Midday, trained by Henry Cecil.
French raiders Stacelita and Rosenara have both attracted support in the ante post market, together with the Sir Michael Stoute-trained Strawberrydaiquiri.
Frankie Dettori will be on board the Godolphin-trained Antara, and Kieran Fallon takes the mount on the Luca Cumani-trained Contreddanse, who will be looking for a fourth consecutive victory.
With the Henry Cecil yard continuing in top form, the selection is for Midday, with perhaps a sporting each way bet on the Hayley Turner-ridden Barshiba.
Beckhampton trainer Roger Charlton won the Stewards’ Cup with Genki last season, and although conditions are likely to be a bit different on Saturday with the going on the fast side, the six-year-old, set to carry a 3lb penalty for his recent win, could give his supporters a good run.
Favourite for the Cavalry Charge is likely to be last weekend’s winner, Hawkeyethenoo, who could be in the shake up. However, the column’s tentative selection is an each way interest on Enact from the Sir Michael Stoute yard.
Channel Four cameras will be at the meeting for the first four races, as well as taking in the first three races at Newmarket.
Other meetings are scheduled for Thirsk, where Face the Problem could be a winner for Lambourn trainer Barry Hills and at Doncaster where the Manton-trained Arcano could make the trip north worthwhile.
Ridden by local jockey George Baker the four-year-old was not winning out of turn having finished second in a decent race at Sandown on his previous outing.
“It’s always nice to get a winner especially at a big meeting,” said the trainer. “It must be our lucky course with Touch Of Style winning there earlier in the season.
“Rules ‘n Regulations has had a bit of a stop/start preparation this season having had colic, a bit of a virus and then stood on a nail. But he’s got over all that and is still lightly raced.
“George Baker, who I consider one of the top jockeys around, gave him a great ride, he got short of room at one stage but George pulled him out and went on to win by two and a half lengths.
“George said he thought he might stay a mile, which gives us more scope and perhaps we can aim for one of the big handicaps, he deserves a chance. He can get a bit geed up before a race but George sits quiet and calms him down well.”
The Lambourn trainer reported that the yard had four two-year-olds that could be making their debut in a few weeks.
“We are looking forward to the rest of the season and hopefully getting a few more winners under our belts.”
Matthew Salaman took over the reins from his father Taffy at Rosehill Stables in Lambourn a year ago with a fine pedigree behind him having been an assistant trainer to Aidan O’Brien at Ballydoyle for seven years and assistant to Nick Littmoden in Newmarket. He also had spells with Michael Dickinson in the USA and with Australian trainer John Hawkes in Sydney.
