ATHLETICS: Elaine's running out of time

ELAINE O’Neill is desperately looking for races to sharpen up ahead of the Commonwealth Games, writes KEVIN FAHEY.

The 21-year-old Chippenham sprinter hasn’t raced since being selected for the Great Britain relay squad at the European Championships and she wasn’t needed in Barcelona.

Hopes of a race in Rieti, Italy, last weekend came to nothing and with the deadline looming for the Wales team to leave for their holding camp in Doha later this month, O’Neill is running out of options.

“It is really difficult to find races at this stage of the season,” she said.

“It is times like this when you need an agent.

“Luckily UK Athletics offer an agent’s service but it is still proving difficult and I may need to get an agent in the future.”

O’Neill is waiting to hear whether she can get an invite to run in Sardinia next Tuesday (September 7).

And she may also run for her London club Woodford Green with Essex Ladies in the final of the British Athletics League Golden Jubilee Cup on Saturday.

“It would not be ideal to go to the Commonwealths without another race but if it comes to that then I’m still confident I can race well,” she added.
