TOOLSTATION LEAGUE FIRST DIVISION: What went wrong?

11:30am Thursday 2nd September 2010

TOMMY Dryden said he was left struggling to explain Devizes Town’s weekend Toolstation League humiliation in Bristol.

Town were left reeling after a crushing 9-2 defeat at Cadbury Heath in the First Division on Saturday.

Dryden’s new-look side have made a slow start to this year’s Toolstation League First Division campaign, losing four of their opening five games.

But the new Nursteed Road boss, who joined the club in the summer after leaving Calne Town, says that his team’s drubbing in Bristol has left him perplexed.

“Since the weekend, I’ve been sat trying to figure out what went wrong,” he said.

“Believe it or not, in the first 10 minutes of the game we were the better side and we went 1-0 up.

“After that, it was like we just went to pieces and it’s so hard to explain why it happened and why we were so poor on the day.

“Sometimes, you may get two or three players that aren’t on their game but it was the entire team and every time Cadbury Heath shot, they scored – I tried making changes but that didn’t help either.

“I’ve never been in charge of a side that’s lost by so much but I do think that a lot of teams have those kind of results from time to time.

“We’ll have to draw a line under it and probably forget about the result completely.”

Town have the ideal opportunity to do just that on Saturday, when they take on Wessex League Division One side Amesbury Town in the Fa Vase.

JAMES Weston fired Devizes into an early lead against Cadbury Heath on Saturday, before Tommy Dryden’s men slipped to a humiliating defeat.

Sasha Tong struck three times in quick succession, with ex-Calne and Corsham striker Toby Colbourne making it 4-1 to the Bristol-based hosts before half-time.

Chris Astley, Ryan Couzens and Luke Corrish all got themselves on the scoresheet before Colbourne netted twice late on to claim his hat-trick.

Jake Walters pulled a goal back for Devizes in injury time but Dryden’s side were well-beaten.

The Nursteed Road boss hopes to welcome back summer signing Mark Dolman for this weekend’s FA Vase clash with Amesbury Town, with the striker expected to have recovered from an injury picked up in a car accident last month. Midfielder Rob Mitchell could also return after injury.
