TWO of the counties fine young prospects Ashley Keirl (Spencer Moulton) and Kyle Anderson (Westlecot) will meet in the final of the Unbadged Singles this Sunday at Wootton Bassett, writes DAVE EATON.
The two youngsters booked their places in the final when recording two excellent victories last Saturday at Chippenham Town in the quarter and semi-finals.
In a tight game, 20-year-old Keirl beat Chris Payne (Garrards) 21-19 and then followed it up with a 21-17 win over James Nobbs (Marlborough).
Anderson, 17, who has played in the Middleton Cup for Wiltshire this year, turned the tables and gained revenge over Avon’s Mark Ashcroft for his 21-11 loss in last year’s final.
Ashcroft, winner of the unbadged singles for the past two years, lost 21-16 to Anderson who then comfortably overcame Bob Leonard 21-5 in the semi-finals.
County president Roger Green said: “Ashley had two cracking games and produced two good victories.
“He only really started playing for us here at Spencer Moulton last season but has played for the County U25 side already.
“He is an up-and-coming lad and a fine prospect for the future, give him a couple more years and he should be a very good player.”
The Two Wood Singles saw the Chippenham Town club dominate proceedings on their own green with Dave Godwin and John Lucas battling their way through to the final.
Godwin had two comfortable 21-9 wins while Lucas registered a 21-11 success and then in a tougher encounter beat Swindon’s Geoff Porte 21-16.
In the Champion of Champions semi-finals Spencer Moulton’s Russell Francis received a reprieve although he was getting hammered by Winsley’s Jack Swinburne.
When Swinburne picked-up a three to move 20-9 ahead and only wanting one shot for victory he conceded. Apparently he would have been unable to play in the final owing to previously booked holiday commitments.
Francis will therefore play Westlecot’s Mike Jackson in the final who had a comfortable 21-7 semis win over Norman Gould.
Wootton Bassett took the honours 18-15 against Westlecot in the first of the Over 60’s Triples finals.
But in the second, owing to illness and holiday commitments, Bassett conceded a walkover to Malmesbury.
The finals of all these events plus several others will be played on Sunday (September 12) at Wootton Bassett (start 10am).
