FA VASE: Rout best forgotten as Devizes hit back

8:50am Thursday 9th September 2010

TOMMY Dryden didn’t remind his players of their 9-2 humiliation at Cadbury Heath in the league the previous week in the lead up to Saturday’s clash – but the Devizes Town boss was delighted to see his side respond by booking their place in the second qualifying round.

After falling behind to an early strike from Amesbury’s Nathan Barnett, Devizes rallied and levelled the scores midway through the second-half.

A deflected corner found it’s way to Craig Townsend, who was left with a simple finish from close range.

Devizes continuted to push for a winner and despite the scores remaining at 1-1 after 90 minutes, the home side claimed got their second in the first period of extra-time.

This time, Townsend turned provider as he clipped a ball to Mark Dolman at the far post, who slotted home his first goal for the club and sent Dryden’s men through to the next round.

“To be honest, I didn’t even mention last week’s result at all but I did ask for a better performance from the lads,” said boss Dryden. “We controlled the game and the character we showed and the attitude was excellent.

“Every player played with discipline and across the pitch, they were all getting everything right – we controlled the game and got our just rewards.”

Devizes face a tough task this weekend when the focus switches back to the Toolstation Leauge First Division and the visit of early pacesetters Merthyr Town, who were demoted from the Southern League in the summer.

Jake Roberts will be suspended after picking up a red card in pre-season.
