JASON Forster rated his side’s performance a “seven out of 10’’ as Chippenham gave him a winning start to his coaching tenure at Allington Field.
The former Wales international focussed on the positives after an eight-try display comfortably disposed of their Somerset visitors in their Tribute South West One West opener.
“To score 58 points and nine tries, with a few guys debuting and with the new structures we have been trying to put in place, is very pleasing,’’ said the head coach.
“We are trying to play rugby and some of the decision-making and skills on show were great.
“We were clinical near the try line and, for a first outing when we’d brought a lot of good things in, it was a seven out of 10.’’ Chippenham did switch off at the end of each half, notably in the second period when Clevedon scored three late tries.
But Forster said: Let’s focus on the positives. We’re not the finished article and nothing is going to go easily all the time. They’ll face adversity and it’s how they deal with that.’’ Fly-half Rich Taylor booted 18 points and there were two tries each forflanker Nick Doyle and wing Ryan Surry, with the hosts virtually out of sight at half-time.
Debutants Charlie Goodwin, at full-back, and Christian Novic on the wing, impressed, setting up both of Surry’s scores, while props Pete Kirby and Niall Howard followed hooker James Down across the whitewash in the second half.
Sub Dom Riccio finished off the try of the match, strolling over after centre Rupert Crockett and Surry had exchanged passes in a move that started in their own half.
The visitors came back late on, with touchdowns for Harvey Russell, Chris Cates and Ryan Smith, but scrum-half Steve Johnson suffered a horror day with the boot, missing five shots at goal.
n MINETY warmed up for their Dorset & Wilts One North opener against Wootton Bassett 2nd on Saturday as a mixed first and second team side defeated Tadley 2nd 43-15.
The villagers followed up their 31-7 pre-season with a seven-try victory, Will Dyer scoring two tries and Dale Langdown, Dan Shepherd, Ben Parfitt, Richard Fisher, Andy Pratten scored tries.
