Town open up seven point lead at the top

HELLENIC LEAGUE:

Tytherington Rocks 3, Trowbridge Town 0

ANOTHER fine performance saw Trowbridge continued their unbeaten start to the season with a 3-0 victory at Tytherington Rocks.

Going into the game the Bees expected a tough contest because mid-table Tytherington were unbeaten in their last 16 outings and are known for being hard to break down.

However, goals in either half from the in-form Matt Minnis and an Andy Bloodworth strike saw the visitors increase the gap at the top of the table to seven points.

Trowbridge have now won seven of the last eight league encounters, scoring 20 goals and conceding only five.

Manager Paul Shanley said: "That's the best we've played all season by far, the whole team were excellent.

"We used all 14 players and their work rate was just tremendous.

"Tytherington are a good side and I'm sure they will finish in the top six, so we were expecting it to be difficult, but we completely dominated the game."

A dream start got the Bees buzzing immediately when Minnis scored in the first minute after beating a couple of Tytherington defenders in the 18-yard box to fire home from a tight angle.

Once in front the result never looked in doubt and the visitors gave the hosts a fine display of possession football, showing off the quality that has taken them to the top of the league.

For all the pressure created, Trowbridge failed to find another goal in the first half and the lead wasn't doubled until the 52nd minute.

It finally came from a weak back pass, which Minnis latched onto in a flash to claim his second of the match.

Although Tytherington improved after the break they still couldn't find a way past the water tight Trowbridge defence, and were reduced to a few half attempts that never really threatened to bring goals.

However, Trowbridge did continue to threaten and look like adding to the goal tally, which they did with about 20 minutes to go when Bloodworth headed home a corner from close range to seal an outstanding team performance.

Said Shanley: "The first half was a bit of a battle, but they did nothing at all to trouble us, and I actually thought the final score could have been three or four more with the chances we created.

"I said to the team afterwards that it is now up to them to keep the high standards we have set so far.

"The average age of the team is about 20 or 21, so we are a very young side which means they have plenty of time to improve and develop into even better players."

Shanley also praised his defenders for the excellent platform they have given the Bees this term.

"Before the season started we knew we needed to tighten the defence, which is made easier by the amount of hard work the team does from the front and the way they run their socks off for each other," he said.

"One of our major strengths is that we have some very good defenders and goalkeepers at this club."

Tomorrow Trowbridge will look to extend the lead at the top of the table even further when they play host to a Cricklade Town team that has already lost four games.
