SPORTS AWARDS: Sport volunteers to be rewarded

THE army of volunteers who selflessly prevent sport in Swindon from grinding to a halt are set to be rewarded for their hard work and dedication.
With the mouth-watering prospect of the London Olympics drawing ever closer, the Pride of Swindon Awards has included an extra category to honour what is a special sporting year.
Volunteers help run the hundreds of sports clubs in the town, and take up roles ranging from coaches and officials to kitchen assistants and web page designers.
Volunteers also play an incredible role in staging some of the most prestigious sporting events in the world, and come in all shapes and sizes and have different skills and experiences.
The deadline for nominations is Friday, February 10, and forms can be downloaded from www.swindon.gov.uk.
Volunteer Centre Swindon has been named as a sporting champion by Volunteering England, and centre manager Sue Dunmore is delighted to have the chance to work with sporting volunteers in the town.
She said: “Volunteer Centre Swindon is delighted to become a partner in the sporting champion project.
“It will give us the opportunity to work with sports groups to help them develop opportunities to involve volunteers.
“For most of these groups volunteers are vital and this project will help them engage with the non-technical sports volunteers, for example those seeking catering and administration roles.
“The project will help us build on the relationships we already have, and in particular we are looking at ways to help sports clubs through our Involve Swindon, Employer Supported Volunteering Project.”
