ANY lingering doubts Semington Magpies may have had over their fight to stay in the top flight of Trowbridge League football were ended after they beat a struggling Broughton Gifford side, whose 3-2 loss has as good as condemned them to a place in Division Two next season. Three successive away wins for Semington prior to the visit of Broughton had seen Ricky King’s side move well clear of the relegation zone.
However, with their top flight safety still in the balance, a defeat against their guests who themselves needed the points to stay in the division would have seen them undo all their previous good work.
Magpies' last outing may have been three weeks ago when they beat Freshford and although the game with Broughton was only their second in over two months they showed no signs of rustiness as they kept their winning run going. Broughton made the perfect start taking an early lead against their hosts, who hit back to cancel out Jamie Lardner’s opener when Allan Clarke headed home from close range.
Semington got their noses in front early in the second half through Kelvin Lockwood who lobbed the Broughton keeper from 18 yards.
Broughton went straight back as Semington and, with the home team still celebrating taking the lead, they were caught out in defence with Lardner scoring his second of the afternoon to square things up for the visitors.
With 20 minutes remaining Richard Allum scored what proved to be the winner for Semington when he headed home a Dan Rimmer cross.
