s celebrating the greatest moment of his squash career so far after he was crowned Welsh Over-60s champion at the principality’s Masters Champ-ionships last weekend.

The 60-year-old, of Old Rickyard, had a bye through the first round but went on to beat rivals Phillip Guy and Jeffrey Perrett before triumphing 6-9, 9-5, 9-7, 9-6 over Peter Steed in the final at Swansea Tennis and Squash Club on Saturday.

Morgan, who is also the chairman of Marlborough Squash Club, was competing at the Masters Champion-ships for the seventh time and reckons that his first-ever national title proves that he’s got better with age.

“It’s definitely the pinnacle of my squash career and I’m chuffed to bits about it,” said Morgan, who has 13 caps for Wales and will represent in his country again against England, Ireland and Scotland in May’s home international in Dublin.

“I only had three rounds but it was really tough and there were no gimmes.

“I’ve played for my country and done things at county level before but never a big individual title like this.

“I only started taking my squash seriously when I was about 40 but I’d say that I’m a lot better now than I was when I was younger.

“I play four times a week. The hard and fast game suits me because I like to run around the court and it’s nice that I can still mix it with the younger boys.”

Morgan, who was born in Tredegar, south-east Wales, has lived near Marlborough for 24 years.

The new Masters champion, who runs a software development company, has been an official of Marlborough Squash Club for around 15 years.
