An event too far for ace Howell

GOLF DAVID Howell admitted that the Dunhill Links tournament was an event too far' as he missed the cut.

Howell birdied three of his last five holes at Carnoustie to card a highly creditable 70, but still missed the cut by some distance as he struggled with the recurrence of a shoulder injury.

"I think it was an event too far for me," the Swindon golfer said. "But it looks like there is still all to play for and I must try and get myself fit."

Meanwhile Ireland's Padraig Harrington claimed the 10th European Tour title of his career in the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship at St Andrews.

Harrington carded a final round of 68 at the Old Course for a five-shot victory over Anthony Wall, American Edward Loar and overnight leader Bradley Dredge.

The first prize of £427,441 lifted Harrington into second place on the European Tour Order of Merit behind Ryder Cup team-mate Paul Casey and in front of third place Howell with two events remaining.
