UPTON Scudamore triathlete Leanne Tiley is celebrating after qualifying for the ITU World Triathlon Championships in New Zealand last Saturday – but she wasn’t allowed to upstage her mother Diane Hier, who also had a weekend to remember.

On Saturday, 30-year-old Tiley finished third in the 30-35 age group and fourth woman overall at the Dambuster Triathlon in Rutland Water, Leicestershire – her first major national race.

A day later, mum Diane, 50, won the women’s supervet category at the Portishead Sprint Triathlon, finishing almost 13 minutes ahead of Corsham Running Club’s Diane Aldridge.

She also finished fourth lady overall.

The duo are both members of Trowbridge-based triathlon club DB Max and daughter Tiley, who works as a freelance beauty therapist, is now looking forward to donning a Great Britain vest in Auckland this October.

“I had a great race and I can’t really believe it,” said the Wiltshire triathlete.

“I’ve been running triathlons for about six years but I’ve only joined the DB Max team this year and I’ve only recently started training with a coach (Frome-based Paul Ryman).

“I always just used to do it for fun before.

“There are three qualification races for the World Championships and I’m still going to be doing another one, which is the Deva Divas triathlon in Chester (on June 30).

“I’m so excited about going to New Zealand and I honestly can’t wait for it.

“Whatever I do between now and then I’ll leave up to my coach – I just let him decide.”

Hier, who lives with her daughter in Upton Scudamore, was delighted with last weekend’s family affair but was celebrating the most over Tiley’s World Championship qualification.

“I’m definitely a proud parent and she deserves it because she’s worked really hard,” she said.

“I went up with her on the Friday and was there to watch on Saturday before my race on Sunday.

“We always train together and she’s had great support from all of the DB Max members. I’m really pleased for her.”

Will Whitmore, of DB Max, said of Tiley’s achievement: “For someone who is still learning a lot about triathlon, it is amazing.

“Since she came on board with the DB Max race team, we got her a coach and she has followed his instructions to the letter. It’s paying off!”

In August last year, Tiley won the Wiltshire Times Trowbridge Triathlon, beating sister Vicky Hier, 29.
