SNOOKER star Ben Harrison is appealing for people around the county to pick up their cues and help save the West Wilts Snooker League.

The 21-year-old Hawkeridge Amateur, who launched his latest bid to break into the professional circuit this week, has been a regular in the West Wilts League in recent years but with numbers dwindling, Harrison is keen to drum up more competitors.

The league holds evening matches at venues such as Player’s in Westbury, Dilton Marsh Social Club and Winsley Social Club, with team, singles, doubles, seniors and billiards competitions taking place.

“We’ve only really got two leagues of eight teams at the moment but other snooker leagues around the country have so much more than that,” said Harrison.

“It’s dying and I’m not sure why people aren’t joining the league because it’s a good bit of fun and a great way to spend a night.

“I’ve played in it for years and I’m usually in a team with my friends Steve Smart and Dave Carroll.

“People like Steve Lee (World number eight) and Adam Wicheard (Trowbridge professional) have both played in the league and there all kinds of different competitions.”

Meanwhile, Harrison is back practicing at Westbury’s Player’s club after leaving his base at the Wessex Club in Warminster and celebrated his 18th 147 break against Steve Flavin in Corsham on Wednesday night.

The young star kicked off his season with the first 2012/2013 Player’s Tour Championship event at Gloucester’s South West Snooker Academy yesterday.

Harrison is also on the lookout for a new waistcoat sponsor. Anyone interested can contact him on 0773 885 7599.
