BOWLS: Will Purton's Baker rise to the occasion

SWINDON and District Men’s and Women’s finals day will be staged this weekend.

The men’s finals will be played today at West End while the ladies’ will be held at Westlecot tomorrow.

Purton ’s Colin Baker features in three finals while John Wilson (Westlecot), Roy Major (West End) and Dave Hall (Purton) all contest two finals.

Baker competes in the triples along with Hall while the duo also face another Purton partnership in the pairs. Baker also has to face Chris Payne (Garrards) in the champion of champions event.

Swindon & District official Major competes in two singles events, Officers Cup and Retired Singles, in the latter he faces John Wilson who also features in the morning fours final.

Purton duo Alison Fail and Chris Mitchell face a hectic time in the ladies finals. Fail competes in four finals while Mitchell will contest three. The only other player to be involved in more than one individual event is Highworth ’s Linda Kingston.

  • WANBOROUGH Bowls Club are staging a special charity match next Wednesday (2pm) on their green at Hoopers Field in memory of former club captain Ray Miller.

They will host a seven rink fours match against Swindon Post Office with all proceeds raised going to the Swindon Asbestos Group.

Miller, who previously played for Cricklade before joining Wanborough in late 2008, had just retired from the Post Office last year and passed away only a few months later.

He was a good servant to the club, a competitive bowler who played in both of Wanborough’s Wiltshire and Swindon & District League sides.

The Post Office team has been assembled by Terry Costello, Eric Collier and Dave Woodbridge and consists of past and present employees.
