WOOTTON Bassett claimed their third higher-division scalp of the season in the FA Cup to advance to the second qualifying round for the first time in the club’s history.

Dave Turner’s men had already eliminated Calne and Hamworthy before dumping out local rivals Highworth 3-1 at Rylands Way tonight.

Boss Turner said: “The players were magnificent, especially when you consider we lost 6-0 to Hamble four days ago. I’m really pleased for the players.

“Highworth battered us for the first 10 minutes and it would have been easy to capitulate, but for 70 minutes I thought we were the better team.

“It wasn’t a lucky 3-1, and to be fair to Fish (John Fisher, Highworth boss), he said that to me afterwards.”

Aaron Maximen put the visitors in front after just four minutes before Steve Yeardley levelled with 28 minutes gone.

Matt Bown converted a penalty after the break to put the hosts in front for the first time.

And with 16 minutes to play, the in-form Mark Barnes tapped in to ensure Bassett’s path into the second qualifying round.
